English summary: At the first view it appears that a successful Instrument for the cooperative state and regional development has been shaped with the metropolitan regions. Empirical results show, however, that some metropolitan regions exhibit pronounced functional deficiencies and conflicts and therefore are difficult to establish. Contrary to the official announcements, they represent therefore in practice no successful, but rather a succeeding, plans. How much the metropolitan regions stand under the imperative of success, show itself in their observable revitalization. The author observes the German process of metropolitan building in a critical way. He poses the question, why a new version is always necessary and is pushed by the regional actors. For an answer he provides numerous problems and problem solving strategies, how they have turned out using the example of middle Germany. He embeds the results of the analysis in a space and time-referenced diagnosis of society, in order to suggest the necessity and consequences of this revitalization. German description: Auf den ersten Blick scheint mit den Metropolregionen ein erfolgreiches Instrument zur kooperativen Stadt- und Regionalentwicklung geschaffen worden zu sein. Empirische Befunde belegen jedoch, dass einige Metropolregionen ausgeprägte Funktionsdefizite und Konflikte aufweisen und daher schwierig zu etablieren sind. Entgegen den offiziellen Verlautbarungen stellen sie somit in der Praxis noch kein gelungenes, sondern vielmehr ein zu gelingendes Vorhaben dar. Wie sehr die Metropolregionen unter dem Imperativ des Gelingens stehen, zeigt sich an deren beobachtbarer Revitalisierung.Der Autor betrachtet den deutschen Metropolisierungsprozess auf kritische Weise. Er stellt die Frage, weshalb eine Neuauflage immer wieder nötig und von den regionalen Akteuren vorangetrieben wird. Zur Beantwortung geht er auf zahlreiche Probleme und Problemlösungsstrategien ein, wie sie sich am Beispiel Mitteldeutschlands gezeigt haben. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse bettet er in eine raum- und zeitbezogene Gesellschaftsdiagnose ein, um auf die Notwendigkeit und die möglichen Folgen dieser Revitalisierung hinzuweisen.
