As humans hurtle through the space of their makeshift calendars toward that dreadful, magical millennium-marker of 2001, the concern the Western habit ordinarily reserves for the human caught up in Edens and Armageddons has been extended, or displaced perhaps, to their earthly substrate, Gaia, and to their genes, their biological substrate.
