When Hamlet compares a hawk and a handsaw, he is feigning madness north - northwest to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, who accede to the prince's comparisons to humour them, to seek out information for the king and queen and to show some deference to Hamlet owing to their different social positions (II.ii.378-79).
