The transcriptional control regions of eukaryotic genes can be separated into two basic categories: (i) the "core promoter region", which typically encompasses DNA sequences approximately -40 and +50 respective to the transcription initiation site; and (ii) upstream (or downstream) regulatory elements (Tjian 1996).
