Originally published in 1947 by Henry Holt and Company, this book examines the need to understand the nature of the forces that must be conquered in order to make a better world. Having come of age in the aftermath of the First World War, the author analyzes the causes of mankind's failure to prevent its even more horrible and devastating successor, the Second World War. Simon attributes this failure primarily to a "confusion of conscience".
