The first rare-earth superlattices were grown in the mid-1980s by J. Kwo at Bell Laboratories (Kwo et al. 1985b) on substrates of Nb grown on sapphire prepared at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign (Durbin et at. 1982).
